I would like to congratulate everyone who placed and/or won an honorable mention in the 2008 Fall University of Tennessee Photography Contest. I was especially excited when Jennifer called and informed me that one of the three photos I entered had one first place. Below, you will find the details into the photo.
Title of the photo: Fireman
Location of capture: Knoxville, TN.
Time: Approximately 11:00 am EST
Camera/Lens/Settings: Canon 5d/Canon 70-200mm USM AF IS L, f/8 @ 1/200th ISO 400 and 0 EV. No flash.
History behind the photo: It was shot at a 2 alarm fire in my parent’s neighborhood, Harrill Hills. When I arrived on the scene of the fire, firefighters were anxiously fighting the blaze in hopes of containing it within the walls of the house. Suddenly, the firefighters exited and flames erupted through the roof of the home, shooting flames high into the air. The home, which has spent the majority of the last 10 years unoccupied, was completely destroyed by the blaze. Although no one was hurt, it was interesting to see first hand what kind of dangers our firefighters face on a daily basis. The capture was actually made after the fire. The Assistant Fire Chief (captured above) was actually discussing details of the fire and destruction of the home with the Chief on the scene. He was pointing toward the home.
What made this photo special: His wedding band. His age. The soot on his hands and jacket. The water from fighting the fire. His gear. It just portrays an image of rugged hard work. Years of experience. A family behind the wedding band. Wisdom.
